Social Security's Representative Payment Program

Social Security's Representative Payment Program provides financial management for the Social Security and SSI payments of our beneficiaries who are incapable of managing their Social Security Disability (SSDI) or SSI payments. If you are concerned that someone you know becomes incapable of managing or directing the management of his or her benefits, please call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment to discuss your concerns or you may call the Newburgh Social Security Office at 1-866-504-4801.

Generally, Social Security looks for family or friends to serve as representative payees. When friends or family are not able to serve as payees, Social Security looks for qualified organizations to be representative payees.

Typically a checking account is set up to receive the beneficiary's Social Security  direct deposit. It is the Representative Payee's responsibility to take care of the beneficiary’s day-to-day needs for food and shelter. Then, they must use the money for the beneficiary’s medical and dental care that’s not covered by health insurance. They can also pay for the beneficiary’s personal needs, such as clothing and recreation. The Social Security Administration has an extensive website that describes the program in detail:
